Lovecraft Monsters
Back in the late ’80s, I picked up a Lovecraft collection from Tower Records. The cover art, by Michael Whelan, drew me in, and when I read it, my world changed. This was the first time I really felt connected to a body of work. A universe of horror that far exceeded all the neatly gift-wrapped dark tales pumped out by authors who were more interested in delivering a moral lesson or telling a neatly wrapped-up fable than creating a universe that felt both surreal and all too true to life.
This tattoo was based on the great art by Michael Whelan, and I remember the bassist of Mastodon liked it and asked me if it was based on the Obituary eye (they also used it on the Cause of Death album). Meanwhile, the drummer hit on my girlfriend, not knowing she was my girlfriend! But that’s another story!
