Christmas is Cancelled

Christmas is Cancelled

Christmas is Cancelled.
Early 1980 was a whole different world. It seems like a lifetime ago and even another reality. One piece snow suits, massive blizzards, drifts of snow burying everything, and overgrown woods whose untamed fauna swarmed in around pockets of encroaching human civilization.
I lived upstate in a rural housing development while my dad attended West Point. Tracks of abandoned woodland, a few plots owned by grumpy farmers who shot at us with rocksalt, surrounded our rural two-story house.

We had a blizzard in May, thirteen inches. Giant drifts of slowly blackening snow piled up on the sides of the road.

The banks were so high in the winter, my friends and I would burrow tunnels through them, creating a maze of connected forts.
I use just such a setting for my story Christmas is Cancelled, in my collection of short stories, Down Highways in the Dark…by Demons Driven.
